The right tool

The band saw's intended function is cutting multi-inch-thick metal plate. More often, though, it's really the only tool I have that can open those freaking clamshell packages without a good chance of injury.

I found that half decent medium size scissors work quite well for this purpose

Sure, and I have a bunch of various hefts. The problem is your hand still has to [eventually] pass by the sharp edge you just cut.
It's never the tool that cuts me opening these packages, it's the sharp edges of the sheared, stiff plastic that takes a slice.
The band saw is just 'zip zip zip done'

I usually open clamshell packaging with kitchen shears. I cut off the edges just like you do. (Who ever thought that clamshell was a good idea?)

I have a small bandsaw in my bedroom.

Ignoring my normal wood and (small) aluminium shenanigans, I've found it works great on frozen bread.
