It's sensor noise. The room is lit by two floor lamps and the camera was operating with the aperture wide open and an exposure time of 1/2 second. I'm surprised he held still that long :-)
(It's Camilla's old Olympus that had the CCD die and came back from warranty service 'not the same' so she gave it to me. The new sensor is much noisier and has wierd color balance problems. It has prompted me to write some really nice noise filters, none of which I used on this picture.)
