Align and clamp the 'plus' cut into a .5" square diamond front-and-back die. Stamp a diamond-shaped hole through each strip by hammering the pin through the die and the plus cut, precisely bending back flaps of metal at the edges of the hole. Perforated mesh usually had a 'good' side and a 'rough' side. The pin should be driven through the good side so that the flaps are bent back to the rough side.

Do not remove or bend the flaps flat; leave them as they are after punching at roughly 90 degree angles to the mesh surface.
