Camilla mostly has the baby pics covered, so I think I'll content myself with project posts in the interests of the journal not always being idle. The goal here is more 'Zen essay' than 'log of my current project'. Even if it really is a log of my current project.

I'm not going to say what it is. It's not that the end goal is impressive or a secret, more that knowing the destination takes away from the fun of the journey.

Step 1: Begin with 3x McMaster item #8974K43 (2"x6' 6061 aluminum rod). To make the rod more manageable, rough-cut the three 6' rods into into 24 9" long pieces with a band saw. 9" each leaves plenty of margin for minor errors in later cuts.

Step 2: As shipped, the 6061 aluminum rod is a very rough-surfaced extrusion. The final pieces to be made from the rod are intended to be aesthetic, so the next task is to turn .01"-.02" or so from each 9" section with a lathe to make a nice smooth, sniny, easy to polish surface. The exact diameter of each final piece does not need to be as precise as some later dimensions, so no need to turn each piece to the same precise diameter.
